Test’n’Treat by Body Positive

Sex is a normal part of life, regardless of who you have it with. We’re here to have conversations around sexual health, risk assessment, PrEP/PEP and DoxyPEP access – whatever your needs and experiences may be.

Our staff recognises the power of diversity and inclusivity and the lived experiences of Takatāpui, gay, bisexual, and other men who save sex with men, as well as trans and non-binary people. While our testers, support workers, and volunteers are all gay and bi men, everybody is welcome to our centre. Our services are shaped by the lived experiences of our communities.

Test ’n’Treat is a peer-led initiative run by Body Positive in collaboration with Auckland Sexual Health, providing a welcoming, sex-positive, and safe space for managing your sexual health.

Our services are affirming and evidence-based, to encourage you to engage with your sexual health and make informed decisions.

Our clinic is FREE for everybody, including non-residents. Come see us!

Walk-In Testing

We offer rapid testing for HIV & Syphilis with results in 60 seconds, and a rapid testing for Hepatitis C with results in 20 minutes. Testing for Chlamydia & Gonorrhoea uses self-collected swabs and urine, with results ready in about 2 hours (we’ll txt negative results and call you if it's positive).

Window Period

It’s the time between contact and when the infection is detectable by the test.
HIV (4 Weeks) - Syphilis (90 Days) - Gonorrhoea & Chlamydia (2 Weeks) - Hepatitis C - 90 Days

Positive Results

We'll offer immediate support and refer you for additional testing/treatment, often on the same day. Treatment for all conditions is free for anyone with a valid New Zealand visa.

Negative Results

We’ll discuss prevention strategies and access to PrEP/PEP, and DoxyPEP.

Post-Exposure

If a sexual partner informs you they've tested positive, or if you have symptoms, you should make an appointment to see our nurse directly.

What we TEST'n'TREAT

We provide comprehensive testing, prevention, and treatment services for sexually transmitted infections (STIs):

HIV

Test Window Period: 4 Weeks

Treatment: While there is no cure, HIV is perfectly manageable and treated with antiretrovirals

Prevention: Can be prevented with PrEP (up to 99% effective) or condoms (90%). If you had a recent condomless sex and are not on PrEP, PEP can prevent HIV if started within 72 hours.

Syphilis

Test Window Period: 90 Days

Treatment: Treated and cured with antibiotics. Untreated syphilis can cause serious health problems. Syphilis during pregnancy can harm the baby.

Prevention: Can be prevented with DoxyPEP and/or condoms. Past infections can cause a test to remain positive.

Gonorrhoea & Chlamydia

Test Window Period: 2 Weeks

Treatment: Treated and cured with antibiotics.

Prevention: Chlamydia can be prevented with DoxyPEP and/or condoms. Gonorrhoea can be prevented with condoms, and to an extent, the Bexsero vaccine and DoxyPEP.

Hepatitis C

Test Window Period: 90 Days

Treatment: Treated and cured with antibiotics. Untreated Hep C can cause serious liver problems.

Prevention: Transmitted through blood-to-blood contact, it's primarily prevented by not sharing drug use equipment. A small percentage of infections occur through condomless sex.

Additional Services

DoxyPEP

It’s the use of the antibiotic doxycycline within 72 hours after anal, vaginal or oral sex to help prevent chlamydia and syphilis. We can get you on DoxyPEP! Book a free appointment

PEP

PEP is the use of antiretroviral medication to stop HIV after potential exposure. It needs to be started ideally within 24 hours and no later than 72 hours. Our clinic can provide PEP but only during opening hours. Outside these hours, go to the Emergency Department - PEP is really time sensitive! If you or a friend have PrEP to hand, you can use it as PEP—they are the same drugs.

Free Condoms & Lube

We have free condoms and lube available at our centre; you can help yourself at any time. If you prefer, the Burnett Foundation has a free subscription programme where they’ll mail you condoms once or on a regular basis.

Language Services

You can walk in if you don’t speak English. We have peers who speak Chinese, Spanish, and Portuguese and this webpage with sexual health information in 9 languages. If you still require assistance in another language, let us know.

PrEP

PrEP is the use of antiretroviral medication that, when taken as prescribed, is up to 99% effective in preventing HIV. Book a free appointment

Mpox Vaccine

If you’re a guy who has sex with guys (or in those networks), it’s advised to get Mpox vaccinated. The vaccine doesn't prevent infection but does reduce adverse effects, and it's free! You’ll need 2 doses, 28 days apart for full protection. Book a vaccine appointment

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Should I get a sexual health check?

If you’ve ever had sex, including oral, the answer is yes.

Do I need an appointment to get tested?

Nope! Just drop-in during opening hours.

What if I have symptoms?

If you’re experiencing symptoms, you should skip the drop-in testing and book a free appointment with our nurse. The nurse will do an assessment and treat you straight away.

What if a sex partner told me they have an STI?

If a sex partner has let you know they tested positive for an STI, please book a free appointment with our nurse.

How much does it cost?

Nothing! It’s free. Donations are always welcome to help keep the clinic running.

What if I’m not a New Zealand resident?

At our clinic, all tests are free for everybody. If you get a positive result, treatment is also free for anyone holding any type of valid visa in New Zealand.

You can also access PrEP/PEP and DoxyPEP, but there may be a cost. Learn more.

Besides Resident Visa holders, other internationals may be eligible for funded healthcare. Learn more.

What should I expect when I drop-in for testing?

You’ll be welcomed by one of our fabulous volunteers at reception who will give you a specimen collection kit. You’ll fill up a short digital form with some details (in case we need to get in touch with you). Off to the washroom to self-collect the samples appropriate to you. No awkward conversations just select from the testing menu for the appropriate sites to check for chlamydia and gonorrhoea. A trained peer will come fetch you to a private room and have a friendly conversation with you (if you want) about and sexual health questions and they’ll run the rapid blood tests (HIV, syphilis, Hep C). You get these test results immediately but have to wait 90 minutes for the chlamydia and gonorrhoea to be sent to you.

How long will I wait?

We’re in early days of implementation so it’s hard to precise the wait time for now. We’ll do our best to take no longer than 30 minutes for the whole thing from arrival to all tests done.

When will I get my results?

You'll get HIV and Syphilis results on the spot. Chlamydia, Gonorrhoea and Hepatitis C results will be ready within 2 hours. We’ll txt your results and call if you have a positive result to arrange additional testing, if required, and treatment.

Do you offer treatment?

Yes! Our nurse, in partnership with Auckland Sexual Health, provides free STI treatment. Some cases may require a return visit to ensure the treatment worked. Click here to book a free appointment with our nurse.
